TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Indonesian Transportation Society Danang Parikesit, said that parking meter system can help save parking operational cost. “We will have lesser parking officers,” said Danang.

Danang said that parking meter can trim the number of parking officers to 50 to 70 percent. Moreover, it can provide a more transparent parking income. Danang estimated that government only receives 50 percent of the expected total income so far. Thus, the system will help boost Jakarta regional income.

Moreover, parking meter applies progressive tariff, causing users to avoid parking their vehicles for a long period of time. “The system can also reduce the number of illegal parking,” he said.

However, Danang has warned that that parking meter can be subject of vandalism. Therefore, Danang expects the government to socialize and evaluate the system.
