TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Johan Budi, spokesman for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), said KPK Chief Abraham Samad and other KPK leaders could only call on the Justrice Ministry to revoke remissions for corruptors as they would lessen the deterrent effect of the punishment.
"It [the authority to give remissions] is Justice Ministry's call," Johan told Tempo today.
Johan questioned the ministry's commitment to restrict corruptors from having remissions, since at least 137 corruptors, including Muhammad Nazaruddin, Gayus Tambunan and Susno Duadji would be given remissions by the Correctional Division of Justice and Human Rights Ministry in West Java.
Based on the article 34 paragraph 2 and 3 of the Government Regulation number 99/2012, remissions will be given if a convict shows good behavior and has served six months in prison. However, the article 34A paragraph 1 of the regulation added another requirement of the remissions for graft convicts to restrict them from having remissions [at all].
