TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - It is undeniable that electronic gadgets have become an integral part of the human civilization. In addition to using it for entertainment, why not take advantage of this handy technology to take part in conserving our earth? Here are two apps that enable you to support environment conservation.

Monitoring Air Quality

The ‘Visibility’ app allows you to help monitor the air quality around your place by taking a photo of the sky. The photo will be sent to a central computer that subsequently analyzing the air quality based on the sky’s clarity on the photo. This app was developed by the University of Southern California.

Citizen Science

You like to take a walk back to nature and observe the amazing things you find on the way? If you do, then make sure your smartphone is not left behind!

For devices that accompany us almost anywhere and anytime, can be accessed quickly, and has several different features, no wonder smartphone also has developed into an important research tool. Camera, voice recorder, notes, GPS, and various other features gathered in a single app. Practical!

Some technology experts are designing an application that will allow anyone to photograph an object of nature (plants or animals) and then send it to a central database to be identified. Thus, people can also be expected to participate in scientific data collection, who knows they would be able to find a new species. One of iOS-based application that has been circulating is ‘LeafView’, where users can photograph the leaves of a plant and send it to a data center to be identified.

Protecting Wildlife

The Taronga Conservation Society Australia is teaming up with TRAFFIC, a wildlife monitoring network to release an app running on iOS called the Wildlife Witness. If users are witnessing illegal wildlife trade, they just need to take picture of the event and upload it on the apps. The photo and information will be sent to TRAFFIC for further action.
