Citizen Science
You like to take a walk back to nature and observe the amazing things you find on the way? If you do, then make sure your smartphone is not left behind!
For devices that accompany us almost anywhere and anytime, can be accessed quickly, and has several different features, no wonder smartphone also has developed into an important research tool. Camera, voice recorder, notes, GPS, and various other features gathered in a single app. Practical!
Some technology experts are designing an application that will allow anyone to photograph an object of nature (plants or animals) and then send it to a central database to be identified. Thus, people can also be expected to participate in scientific data collection, who knows they would be able to find a new species. One of iOS-based application that has been circulating is ‘LeafView’, where users can photograph the leaves of a plant and send it to a data center to be identified.
Protecting Wildlife
The Taronga Conservation Society Australia is teaming up with TRAFFIC, a wildlife monitoring network to release an app running on iOS called the Wildlife Witness. If users are witnessing illegal wildlife trade, they just need to take picture of the event and upload it on the apps. The photo and information will be sent to TRAFFIC for further action.
