TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – United Nations weather agency has issued a warning to governments worldwide to brace for El Nino as it will cause devastating droughts and floods.
Quoted from TIMES on Thursday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issued a statement saying there is a 60 percent chance of El Nino occurring between June and August. This likelihood is estimated to increase to 75-80 percent from October to December.
“We remain vulnerable to this force of nature but we can protect ourselves by being better prepared,” said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud.
When El Nino comes, India is expected to experience weak monsoons while Indonesia and Australia may suffer terrible droughts which will increase risks of forest fires and crop failure. Heavy rains will fall in eastern Pacific and South American countries.
Experts believe water temperature in the Pacific Ocean will continue to increase, peaking during the last quarter of 2014 and dropping in the first few months of 2015.
