TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chair Megawati Soekarnoputri, the fifth Indonesian president, told a discussion titled “Women and the Indonesian Civilization” on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at the party’s central executive board (DPP) that she longed for another woman leading the country.
After the discussion, reporters asked Mega’s daughter Puan Maharani, the DPP chairwoman, as to whether this statement signaled Mega would make another presidential bid next year.
“What do you guys think? You interpret it yourselves,” Puan said while smiling at the DPP PDI-P headquarters in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta.
Puan confirmed her mother wanted to see a female president in the future, and that it was not an issue who the figure was as long as she became the president. “How come there is no female presidential candidate?” she said.
Megawati was noncommittal when asked by reporters on her statement.
