TEMPO.CO, Sampang - The Madura Board of Clerics (Bassra), along with the Madura Ulema Assembly, doubt the effectiveness of the peace treaty between the Sampang Sunni and Shia residents last Monday. They believe this peace charter was engineered.
Bassra spokesman K.H. Fudoli Ruham said the approximately 40 people who attended the signing were not people from Sampang.
Head of the Shia Sampang reconciliation team, Abdul A’la Basyir, said the reconciliation team already knows about the signing of the treaty and is currently reviewing its contents and confirming those involved in the signing of the charter.
A’la admitted the current condition of the conflict location in Omben sub-district and Karang Penang sub-district is favorable yet based on his observations, he said some residents who were involved in the riot last year still refused to accept the Shia community. However, some have also agreed to live peacefully with the Shia people.
Coordinator for the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), Andi Irfan, who is an advocate for the Shia Sampang community, refuted Bassra’s allegations. He said those involved in the violence were present during the signing of the treaty yet he admitted it was designed without involving the Sampang district administration. He said the administration was sluggish in attempting to resolve this problem.
