TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration plans on purchasing 420 midsize buses to replace the aged Metromini and Kopaja bus fleets. The government said the new buses would commence operations later this year.

The government also plans to buy 1,000 units of TransJakarta buses in a bid to better its public transport system and encourage Jakartans to shift from private vehicles to public transports, thus alleviating traffic jams in the capital.

Jakarta Governor Jokowi said he planned on imposing a restriction to limit cars on the roads based on even-odd license plates after the rejuvenation of the bus fleets was complete.

“The odd-even license plate restriction will lead to the electronic road pricing (ERP),” he said at the City Hall on Tuesday, September 4, 2013.

The governor said the odd-even license plate restriction would be imposed within a year or so at the earliest, depending on the preparation for the much-anticipated ERP. “If the ERP is set to take place the year after, perhaps the restriction will be effective within a year. It could be a year or six months,” he said.

The ERP is a traffic policy aimed at reducing the volume of vehicles on the streets by charging fees from motorists passing through them.
