TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Central Java Committee for the Investigation and Eradication of Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism (KP2KKN) has reported that corruption cases in Central Java have risen drastically this year.

The NGO says that as many as 143 corruption cases involving 194 people have been identified this year.

Oly Viana Agustine, Central Java KP2KKN coordinator, says the number of corruption cases and corruptors is almost the same as it was in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, there was a total of 102 corruption cases involving 184 estimated to have caused the state to suffer up to Rp142 billion (US$13.8 million) in losses. This amount more than doubled in 2012 with 215 corruption cases causing state losses of Rp381 billion ($37.039 million).

Central Java’s newly elected governor, Ganjar Pranowo, to be inaugurated on August 23, says he will be extra firm with employees of the state. He has already received numerous complaints about how an employee must pay their way in order to get to the top.

"These types of practices must stop," he asserted.
