TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 20-year-old woman is reported to be infected with H6N1 bird flu in Taiwan last Friday. This case is the first case of H6N1 in this country.
Channel News Asia said that it was "the world's first ever human case of the H6N1 strain of bird flu", which is "commonly found in poultry". The woman showed symptoms of flu in May 5 and was treated in a hospital for mild pneumonia. She is now undergoing intensive care in Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Taipei.
The woman, who works for a diner, has never left Taiwan or been in contact with poultry. CDC explained that the H6N1 virus is undetected in the two poultry farms near the woman's house.
Meanwhile, four of 36 people in contact with the woman showed symptoms of flu, but are not infected with H6N1.
Last April, a 53-year-old Taiwan man was reported to be infected with the H7N9 strain of avian flu. He caught the virus from his workplace in eastern China.
CDC has issued a warning to people who plan to visit China to avoid contact with poultry or visiting traditional markets selling life poultry in order to avoid the infection of H7N9.
