TEMPO.CO, Baghdad – Iraqi state and medical officials informed the media that 7 women and 5 men were killed by several gunmen in a brothel in Bagdhad on Wednesday, May 22.
The gunmen who are yet to be identified, admitted that they broke into the brothel located in the eastern wing of Zayouna District, and immediately open fire.
Prostitution is banned in Islam, the religion that most Iraqis embrace. The murder in the brothel complex happened only 2 days after a chain of bomb explosions that killed at least 70 people in Iraq.
In recent months, Iraq has been under various deadly attacks related to political and sectarian tensions. The intensifiying violence has caused fear among Iraqis that massive killings just like the one happened in 2006 to 2007 will reoccur.
In response to the shooting, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered a cabinet change in the senior ranks of military officials all around the nation.
Zayouna, the place where the deadly attack occured, is a district home for a mixture of Sunnis and Syiahs. The other week, a stall that sold alcohol in the district, which is also prohibited by religion, was attacked by a number of armed men that killed 10 Christian employees while the buyers were allowed to go home.
