TEMPO.CO, Islamabad - Two mosques in northwest Pakistan were hit by bombs, killing 12 . Sources by Al Jazeera said that blast also injured 500 people. "Many of them sustain serious injuries," a source said, Friday.
"Other than killing people, the blasts that hit these two Sunni mosques also caused serious damage to the buildings, with the ceilings collapsing," said a local police officer, Badshah Rehman, adding that the mosques are located in BazDarrah village in MalakanDistrcict, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Al Jazeera correspondent, Imtiaz Tyab, reporting the blasts happened shortly after the Friday prayer. He said the area has been having a very heavy military presence since the Pakistan Swat Valley operation in 2009. "Rescuers were trying to retrieve the dead and wounded from the debris," he said.
Rehman added, "Many people may be trapped under the rubble of the mosques but the remote area is making it difficult for rescue efforts. As of now, no one has claimed responsibility of the blasts, but suspicion will likely fall on the Pakistani Taliban."
