TEMPO.CO, Istanbul – In a press conference held by the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Indonesia was one of the countries included in the 2012 intellectual property rights violation priority watch list along with 12 other country.
Other nations also included in the list are Algiers, Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand, Ukraine, and Venezuela. Despite the improvements made in eradicating piracy and empowering intellectual property rights protection, the US considered that the improvements are not entirely effective, judging by the number of internet-based intellectual property rights violation.
M. Adri, Investigative Director of Directorate General of Intellectual Property at the Ministry Law and Human Rights, stated that previously in 2010, Indonesia achieved a better rank in the watch list due to the establishment of the Intellectual Property Violation Response Team.
"Maybe USTR saw that we are lacking the effort, although the government keeps on eradicating piracy and fraud," said Adri at the Piracy and Fraud Eradication Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.
In the congress, it was revealed that intellectual property rights violation and fraud has resulted in US$ 1 trillion loss and causing 2 million people to lost their jobs.
"That is the cost we have to deal in intellectual property violation and fraud," said Interpol Secretary General, Ronald K Noble.
