TEMPO Interactive, PALU:The situation in the Rief Tiaka area owned by Medco-Pertaminas Joint Operation Body (JOB) in Mamosalato, Morowali, Central Sulawesi, heated up yesterday after a local resident was shot.This happened after two Medco-Pertamina staff were held hostage by scores of residents and students on August 20 and are yet to be released. The students from the Mamosalato Student Forum demanded the company pay more attention to the welfare of the local people.The crowd came to Rief Taka and was blockaded by the police. During the demonstration, a resident was shot. The residents became furious and wanted to leak the gas, said a local villager, Iwan.Central Sulawesi Police chief, Brig. Gen. Dewa Parsana, said the attackers came from Kolo Bawa village, where the two employees are still held. Reports from the ground said they are in good condition, said Parsana.He added the crowd demanded the companys managers negotiate with Kolo Bawa residents. Around 50 police officers have been assigned to anticipate follow-up actions. The police and the provincial government in Morowali are still mediating. Up until yesterday, Rief JOBs managers in Morowali could not be reached. DARLIS
