TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 shaking the Tasikmalaya region and its surrounding areas in the early hours of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 01:45 AM local time. The BMKG stated that the tremor was felt as far as Garut and Pangandaran.
Based on BMKG's analysis, the earthquake's source was located in the sea, approximately 90 kilometers southwest of the center of Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.09 degrees South Latitude and 107.74 degrees East Longitude.
The Head of BMKG Region II Tangerang, Hartanto, stated that the earthquake's source was from a depth of 19 kilometers. "Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred is a type of shallow earthquake due to subduction plate activity," he said in a written statement on Tuesday. Subduction is the thrusting of the Indo-Australian plate beneath the Eurasian plate.
Based on BMKG's tremor map estimation and reports from the community, the earthquake caused tremors in the Cipatujah and Cigalontang Districts in Tasikmalaya Regency. Tremors were also felt in the Singajaya and Pakenjeng Districts in Garut Regency, as well as in Ciamis and Pangandaran Regencies.
The intensity scale of the earthquake felt by residents ranged from II-III MMI. The vibration was felt by several people and caused light hanging objects to sway as if a passing truck was felt inside the house.
Additionally, the earthquake tremor was also reported to be felt in the Sukasari District, West Bandung Regency, with a II MMI intensity scale, felt only by a few people and causing light hanging objects to sway.
"However, there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake," said Hartanto. As of 02:28 AM local time, BMKG's monitoring results have not shown any subsequent earthquake activity (aftershock).
