Jokowi Launches MRT Construction of Tomang-Medansatria Line

11 September 2024 16:16 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo officially launched the construction of the Integrated Mass Rapid Transit (MRTEast-West Line Phase 1 Stage 1 in the MH Thamrin area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. The route will extend 24.5 kilometers from Tomang to Dukuh Atas, Senen, Perintis, and Medansatria.

He said that the construction of the MRT East-West Line was expected to contribute to Jakarta's development as a global city. The project, which includes 21 stations, is anticipated to be completed by 2031.

“With the completion of the MRT, Jakarta will truly become a modern transportation hub,” the President said at the launch event.

Acting Jakarta Governor Heru Budi Hartono highlighted the underground location of the launch event. The site serves as an integration point between the MRT North-South Line (HI Ancol Marina Roundabout) and the MRT East-West Line (Cikarang, Balaraja). The 24.5-kilometer MRT East-West Line comprises 21 stations.

Heru explained that the construction was funded through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank. As previously reported, Indonesia received a loan worth 140.699 billion yen or approximately Rp14.5 trillion from Japan for the construction of the MRT East-West corridor phase 1 stage 1.

The Transportation Ministry serves as the assisting agency, while the Jakarta Provincial Government acts as the implementing agency. Besides, BTA MRT Jakarta serves as the sub-implementing agency.

Meanwhile, the construction of 800 meters of the MRT line in the Bekasi City area was funded through a grant from the Central Government. “The operational costs will be borne by the Jakarta Provincial Government through the Public Service Obligation scheme,” Heru noted.

MRT President Director Tuhiyat and Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masaki Yasushi also attended the launch of the MRT East-West Line Phase 1 Stage 1 construction at MH Thamrin.
