Jakarta Creative Space Pos Bloc Caught Fire, Estimated Loss Rp2bn

10 September 2024 11:32 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Head of Central Jakarta Fire Handling and Rescue, Asril Rizal, said a short circuit allegedly caused the fire at Jakarta’s creative space, Pos Bloc.

“A short circuit in one of the coffee shops at Pos Bloc area allegedly caused the fire. We immediately deploy officers to handle the fire, 14 firetrucks and 56 personnel in total,” Asril said on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

Asril said his agency received a report on the fire at around midnight on Tuesday when a resident came to Pasar Baru fire station. The agency first deployed three units of firetrucks from Pasar Baru and Istiqlal Mosque stations. Officers arrived at the location at around 00:50 a.m. Jakarta Time and the fire has spread.

After 30 minutes, firefighters successfully extinguished the fire and started the cooling process at 01:3 a.m. “There were no casualties or grave injuries due to the fire. The fire burned down a 1,000-meter square area with a projected loss of around Rp2 billion,” Asril said.

Meanwhile, an officer on duty, Mulandono, said the fire originated from the kitchen in one of the coffee shops at Pos Bloc. Security officers believed the fire was caused by a short circuit in the room.

Officers then attempted to extinguish the fire and contacted the Fire Handling and Rescue. However, the fire spread and burned down Al Abror Mosque which stood directly on the side of Pos Bloc.

"Until this morning, our officers are still on standby to anticipate a re-ignition. We will dismantle the ceiling for heat insulation,” Mulandono said.

Pos Bloc is a creative space that accommodates micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to display their products through a curation process. This place used to be known as the Philately Building owned by the Indonesian postal company, PT Pos Indonesia.

PT Pos Indonesia collaborated with PT Ruang Kreatif Pos when it first opened Pos Bloc on October 10, 2021.
