TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo met with Singapore's Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon, September 5, 2024.
Coordinator of the President's Special Staff, Ari Dwipayana, confirmed that Teo Chee Hean's visit to the Palace was a courtesy call to Jokowi.
“He is in Indonesia to attend the International Sustainability Forum at the invitation of the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment,” Ari said in a text message to Tempo on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Teo declined to make a statement as he exited the State Palace around 11:40 a.m. He simply smiled and waved. The meeting lasted for one hour.
Teo Chee Hean was appointed Senior Minister on May 1, 2019. He has also served as Coordinating Minister for National Security since May 21, 2011.
Additionally, Teo oversees Singapore’s Smart Nation and Digital Government Group, the National Security Coordination Secretariat (NSCS), the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD), and the National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) under the Prime Minister's Office.
On Thursday morning, Jokowi also attended the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum. He highlighted the challenges of addressing climate issues and emphasized the importance of committing to a green economy. He considered the energy transition and sustainability as urgent matters amidst the dangers of climate change.
“I want to emphasize that the problem of climate change will never be resolved as long as the world adopts an economic approach, as long as the world prioritizes its own profits, and as long as the world remains self-centered,” Jokowi stated in his opening speech at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum in the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
