Hundreds of Catholics Await Pope Francis's Arrival at Jakarta Cathedral

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of Catholics await the arrival of Pope Francis at the Jakarta Cathedral this afternoon, Wednesday, September 4, 2024. The agenda is scheduled after the Pope meets with President Joko Widodo or Jokowi in the morning.
Based on Tempo’s observation, authorities cleared off the road between Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque at around 02:10 p.m. Jakarta Time. The media crew start gathering around the cathedral at 02:20 p.m.
The crowd lines up at the west side of Jalan Katedran for 500 meters in anticipation of Pope Francis’ arrival.
On the other side of the road, joint apparatus of the Indonesian military and police guard the cathedral from all sides. K9 detection dogs and bomb disposal units are seen among the personnel. Observation posts are installed in several places, including Istiqlal Mosque and Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara.
Catholic nuns and some foreign tourists holding up Indonesian and Vatican flags stand among the crowd while waiting for Pope Francis’ Innova Zenix car to cross the street.
Meanwhile, liturgical music is heard from inside the cathedral ahead of the Pope’s arrival. Across the street, some religious musicians play music to welcome the Bishop of Rome.
Pope Francis’ entourage was scheduled to depart from the Vatican Embassy to the Jakarta Cathedral at 04:00 p.m. He will meet with bishops, priests, deacons, members of consecrated life institutes, seminarians, and catechists.
Pope Francis will also meet with Sholas Occurentes youths, the international education movement released globally by the Pope in 2013. The meeting will commence at around 05:35 p.m.
