TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Arriving at the Vatican Embassy in Jakarta (Apostolic Nunciature) today, September 3, 2024, Pope Francis is welcomed by refugees and orphans. The Indonesian Community of Sant’Egidio escorted the five children.
Two of the children delivered a painting illustrating a tree, flags of various countries, and hands interlinked with ‘Our World’ written at the bottom. Pope Francis is seen smiling at the children.
Meanwhile, the Pope is also seen blessing the refugees on their foreheads. The Director of the Vatican Press Bureau, Matteo Burni, said the refugees originated from various countries.
“Including some from Rohingya and Myanmar,” Matteo told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
Some of the orphans meeting Pope Francis today are raised by Dominican nuns. On the other hand, the refugees and unhoused people are sheltered by the Jesuit Refugees Service, a refugee service foundation managed by the Catholic organization.
Pope Francis holds special attention for migrants and orphans. During his flight to Indonesia, on Monday, September 2, the Pope said: “migrants are close to my heart.”
Through his messages in the Catholic church, Pope Francis conveyed for his people to care for migrants. According to the Pope, those who reject and refuse aid to migrants committed a ‘grave sin.’
