TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo emphasized Indonesia's commitment to being a part of the global solution in a world facing numerous challenges. He highlighted that developing countries, particularly those in the Global South, are disproportionately affected by the widening global fragmentation.
He delivered this message during the Joint Leaders' Session of the High-Level Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Forum (HLF MSP) and the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum in Bali on September 2, 2024. He underscored the importance of South-South cooperation in addressing these pressing issues.
The term "Global South" refers to regions that share a common political, social, and economic history rooted in disparities that arose during the colonial or imperialist era.
“Indonesia is dedicated to contributing to global solutions, advocating for the interests of the Global South while also serving as a bridge-builder in promoting equality, justice, and solidarity to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Jokowi stated.
He emphasized that Indonesia's commitment to these principles has been consistent since the Asia-Africa Conference 69 years ago. The former governor of Jakarta urged that the spirit of multilateralism not be compromised amidst geopolitical tensions.
The head of state also noted that the world is currently grappling with economic slowdown, rising unemployment and inflation rates, heightened competition leading to adverse consequences, and disruptions in the global supply chain.
He highlighted that only six years remain to achieve the SDGs, with a current achievement rate of 17%. He stressed the need for a new approach to overcome these challenges.
In addition to Indonesia's role as a "bridge-builder", Jokowi presented three other key points. These included the continued focus on the SDGs, the importance of strengthening inclusive partnerships, particularly with African countries, and the need to enhance global cooperation to improve South-South cooperation.
“To bolster North-South cooperation, we must complement each other and work together to address global challenges,” Jokowi declared.
The IAF and MSP series attracted over 1,400 participants, encompassing heads of state, ministers, private sector representatives, and state-owned enterprises. The forums focused on topics such as energy, health, food security, and mining.
