Parts of Bogor Shaken by Weak Earthquakes from Local Faults, BMKG Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tectonic earthquakes shook the Bogor area, West Java, on Sunday, September 1, 2024. The Meteorology Climatology Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded two earthquakes a few minutes apart.
The 2.7-magnitude earthquake shook with weak strength at 18:41 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Based on the BMKG shock level map and reports from the community, the earthquake was felt in Purwabakti Village, Pamijahan District, Bogor Regency.
The intensity scale of the earthquake was II MMI or only felt by a few people and made light objects hanging sway. Until now, according to the BMKG, there have been no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the earthquake.
From the BMKG analysis, the epicenter is located at the coordinates of 6.75 degrees south latitude and 106.65 degrees east longitude. The location of the earthquake source on land is 21 kilometers southwest of the center of Bogor City.
This earthquake is classified as shallow with a depth of 14 kilometers. “The earthquake was caused by active fault activity in the local area,” said the Head of the Tangerang Region II Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Center, Hartanto through a written statement, Sunday night, September 1, 2024.
A few minutes earlier, at 18:33 WIB, the BMKG recorded a preliminary earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 in the same location. “But the earthquake was not felt,” he said. Based on the BMKG monitoring until 19:07 WIB, there was no aftershock activity. The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be accounted for.
