TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anies Baswedan turned down the offer from one of the political parties to run in the West Java election this year, as announced by his spokesperson, Sahrin Hamid, on Thursday night.
"Anies will not run in the West Java [election]," Sahrin said in a brief message late Thursday, Aug. 29, after revealing offers for Anies to run in the West Java regional head election.
Earlier, Sahrin confirmed that Anies was mulling over whether to accept or reject the proposal during a press statement at the Anies Baswedan operational team in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta at around 19:25 Jakarta time.
“There was indeed a special request from a political party asking Anies Baswedan to run in the West Java election,” Sahrin said in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta on Thursday night. The spokesperson said the party was reportedly eligible to nominate a candidate but he did not mention which party was offering Anies to run in the West Java gubernatorial election.
At around 21:24, Sahrin announced Anies’ decision in a short message, saying that Anies Baswedan would not run in the West Java election.
Reports of Anies' candidacy in the West Java election surfaced when PDIP Central Leadership Council Chairperson Puan Maharani commented on the issue. She neither confirmed nor denied that the party would support Anies in the West Java election. "We will see later, the registration period is still open in the afternoon," Puan said at the Parliament Complex on Thursday, August 29.
Ono Surono, the Chairperson of the PDIP West Java Regional Leadership Council, asked the public to wait for the party's official announcement. He emphasized that the party will present a "surprise" gubernatorial-vice gubernatorial candidate.
Previously, PDIP was expected to nominate Anies Baswedan in the Jakarta gubernatorial election. However, the party registered the Pramono Anung-Rano Karno ticket in Jakarta instead.
