TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand recorded the highest tourist visit among Southeast Asian countries in 2024. This country offers a plethora of amazing tourist attractions, ranging from stunning beaches to tranquil temples.
However, not all tourist attractions in Thailand are picture-perfect. The country has its share of tourist traps as some might not offer the authentic experience tourists seek.
According to the Times of India, here are some of the worst tourist traps in Thailand.
1. Bangkok Floating Market
The floating market in Bangkok is one of the popular tourist destinations. The colorful boats full of fresh crops, souvenirs, and street foods are quintessentially Thai, but some may be left disappointed. Markets like Damnoen Saduak are often crowded with tourists, and prices are typically inflated. But if you want to find an authentic floating market experience, tourists can visit less-crowded markets like Taling Chan or Amphawa.
2. Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan
The full moon party in Thailand attracts thousands of visitors to Koh Phangan every month. While promising a night of wild fun, this party is a tourist trap. The beaches are often left littered, and safety can be a concern. To enjoy Thailand’s beach parties without the chaos, consider attending the Half Moon or Black Moon parties, which are smaller and more manageable.
3. Tiger Temple
Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi attracts tourists seeking to witness firsthand tigers and other exotic animals. However, these attractions have faced criticism for unethical practices so tourists are encouraged to avoid the attraction. But if you want to see wildlife, consider coming to ethical sanctuaries such as Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, where animals are treated with respect and care.
4. Patong Beach, Phuket
Phuket’s Patong Beach is famous for its nightlife, with its bustling streets lined with bars, clubs, and restaurants. However, it’s also one of Thailand’s most crowded and overdeveloped areas If you want a calmer beach experience, you should consider visiting Kata or Karon beaches.
5. Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho
Another tourist trap is the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho. The Reclining Buddha is indeed one of the most popular landmarks in Thailand. However, while the temple is undoubtedly stunning, the place is often packed with tourists. The crowd can detract from the spiritual atmosphere, and vendors selling trinkets nearby just add to the commercialized feel of Wat Pho. To enjoy Bangkok temples with fewer crowds, visit places such as Wat Arun or Wat Saket. Despite being less well-known, these temples offer equally impressive architecture.
