TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Kyushu Island, Japan, this afternoon at 02:42 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time), Thursday, August 8, 2024. The quake prompted a tsunami advisory with a potential height of less than a meter.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the Kyushu earthquake would not have any impact on Indonesia’s territory. The tsunami warning was only issued where the quake struck.
The head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said the agency’s TOAST tsunami modeling showed the quake could trigger a tsunami around its epicenter but will not reach Indonesia.
"By considering the location of the epicenter and hypocenter, this earthquake was shallow and suspected to be triggered by the Nankai Trough subduction with a thrust fault mechanism," said Daryono in a statement on Thursday.
According to Daryono, the earthquake was felt the strongest in Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan with an intensity scale reaching VI-VII MMI, and could potentially cause damages.
