TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim asserted that Malaysia will continue to defend the rights of Hamas as a fighter for Palestinian liberation. Malaysia would cooperate with all groups, including the Palestinian Authority, he said.
The statement was conveyed during the prime minister’s speech at the “Himpunan Pembebasan Palestin” or the Palestine liberation rally at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday evening.
The Palestinian struggle is similar to the struggle of Malaysian people, said Anwar in front of tens of thousands of Malaysians, cabinet ministers, and foreign ambassadors who attended the event.
Therefore, Anwar said he did not care who the Western decided Malaysia should defend.
"Palestinian women and children run around eating wastes, bodies covered in sand. This is what’s being shown to us daily,” he said.
Anwar also questioned the existence of human rights, humanity, and voices of freedom if it’s upheld based on skin color.
“Why have, for decades, Palestinians been viewed as subhuman?” he remarked in his speech. The answer, he said, is nothing short of a hypocritical attitude.
Anwar, in his speech, said that Malaysia will not back down from supporting the Palestinian liberation.
Anwar asked Malaysian people to never stop talking about Palestine and to keep helping and making efforts to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian people.
"I want Malaysia to be recorded in history among countries that are more consistent and serious about fighting for the Palestinian people," said Anwar.
