Indonesians Warned Against Travel to Lebanon, Iran, and Israel

5 August 2024 07:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaDue to escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, August 4, 2024, strongly advised Indonesian citizens against traveling to Lebanon, Iran, and Israel until security conditions improve. Moreover, Indonesian nationals already in the region are urged to exercise extreme caution and follow guidelines issued by Indonesian representatives.

Indonesians in Lebanon are particularly advised to depart the country immediately. Those requiring assistance can contact the Indonesian Embassy Hotline in Beirut: +961 7 0817 310, Indonesian Embassy in Tehran: +989 0 2466 8889, Indonesian Embassy in Amman: +962 7 7915 0407, or the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta: +62 812 9007 0027.

The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas political bureau, in Tehran on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, has significantly heightened tensions. Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel, which has not confirmed or denied involvement. This incident follows the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in a suspected Israeli airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Concerns over an imminent war between Israel and Hezbollah have grown as both sides exchange attacks. The tensions have escalated since the Israeli brutal attacks in Gaza which resulted in the deaths of nearly 39,500 people following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack.

On Friday, August 2, 2024, Hamas' new leader Khaled Meshaal reaffirmed his party's stance against recognizing Israel and its commitment to its principles.

In addition to Indonesia, the French Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens to leave or avoid travel to Iran for whatever reason due to the risk of increased military tensions. This warning is also linked to Haniyeh's assassination, which has fueled tensions between Israel and Iran and angered Hezbollah. Western media reports suggest a potential Iranian retaliation against Israel.
