TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The University of Indonesia (UI) has maintained its position as the leading university in Indonesia and has further elevated its standing to the 8th spot in Southeast Asia, according to the July 2024 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
Since 2020, UI has been the sole Indonesian institution to grace the Top 10 of Southeast Asia in this prestigious ranking. The university also clinched the 103rd position in Asia and 540th globally out of a total of 31,000 higher education institutions worldwide.
UI Chancellor Ari Kuncoro expressed that this achievement aligns with the university's long-term vision of becoming one of Southeast Asia's top five universities, as outlined in the 2015-2035 Development Plan.
The upward trajectory in the Webometrics Ranking, Ari said, has brought UI closer to realizing the goal. “Besides, the ranking improvement is a significant step towards establishing UI as a "National Teacher" and a leading institution in Asia,” he stated in a written release on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Webometrics conducts biannual assessments in January and July, evaluating a university's website accuracy and performance. The ranking employs three key indicators: visibility (50%), transparency (10%), and excellence (40%).
Ari explained that these indicators assess UI's performance across various dimensions, including teaching commitment, research output, international recognition, and community engagement, including industry and economic sectors.
Compared to the January 2024 edition, UI saw improvement in the excellence indicator, climbing from 1085 to 1000.
The Webometrics Ranking, compiled by Spain's leading public research agency, Cybermetric Lab, considers multiple factors, including research contributions, in its evaluation of universities.
