TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Jakarta Environmental Office and the London-based philanthropic organization Clean Air Fund are exploring collaboration through the Breathe Jakarta Program to improve air quality in the city.

"With their support, we hope to boost the effectiveness of emission monitoring program and public awareness campaign," said the Head of the Jakarta Environmental Office, Asep Kuswanto, in a written statement shared on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

Asep welcomed a visit from Clear Air Fund’s Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships Sean Maguire yesterday. The meeting was also attended by representatives of C40 Cities and Vital Strategies who were said to have contributed to the Breathe Jakarta program.

"We are highly enthusiastic about working with the Clean Air Fund. This is a necessary step to achieve cleaner and healthier air in Jakarta," said Asep.

Meanwhile, Sean Maguire expressed his confidence in the potential of this collaboration. Sean referred to Clean Air Fund’s previous collaboration with the local London government. The organization, he said, successfully encouraged the government to switch from the iconic Yellow Taxi to a more environmentally friendly option. "We believe that a similar approach can be applied in Jakarta," he said.

In addition to discussing the Breathe Jakarta Program, the Jakarta government also explored various other initiatives with the Clean Air Fund, such as community-based approaches to air quality monitoring. The Clean Air Fund offers support for the initiatives through funding, technical expertise, and global networks.

The Clean Air Fund also plans to open a representative office in Indonesia to strengthen this collaboration. Maguire emphasized the importance of a local presence to ensure the smooth implementation of the program and to adopt the best solution to adhere to Jakarta’s unique needs.

Sean also explained that the Clean Air Fund offers education initiatives to ensure Jakarta residents understand better the consequences of air pollution to health and the environment.
