Singapore Earns Top Spot as Safest Tourist Destination

19 July 2024 08:54 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSingapore has emerged as the world's safest city for tourists, according to a recent study by Forbes Advisor, a prominent American personal finance platform. The island nation takes the top spot, followed by Tokyo in Japan and Toronto in Canada.

This ranking is the result of an in-depth analysis of 60 major cities worldwide. Researchers employed a comprehensive evaluation framework, considering seven key metrics: health security, crime risk, infrastructure security, digital security, personal safety, travel safety, and natural disaster risk.

Factors Contributing to Singapore's Safety

The report highlighted Singapore's exceptional safety record, attributing it to the nation's strict laws and remarkably low crime rates. Moreover, due to its geographical location near the equator, the island nation enjoys a significantly reduced risk of natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes. Tropical cyclones are highly unlikely to pose a threat to Singapore.

The study also commended Singapore for its top-notch healthcare system, robust infrastructure, and minimal digital security threats. This reflects the ability of Singaporean citizens to navigate the internet freely without significant concerns about privacy breaches, identity theft, or online attacks.

Safety Standings of Other Cities

Tokyo, the runner-up, impressed with the lowest risk for health security and the fifth-lowest for infrastructure security. Additionally, Tokyo received the highest travel safety rating granted by the United States Department of State.

Toronto secured the third position on the list of safest tourist destinations. Forbes Advisor noted that the city has the top travel safety rating from the US State Department, along with its position as the fourth-least vulnerable to infrastructure security risks and the seventh-healthiest city on the list.

Cities Ranked as Least Safe Tourist Destination

In stark contrast, Caracas of Venezuela was deemed the riskiest city globally for tourists. The Venezuelan capital grapples with severe health and crime risks, further burdened by the second-highest digital infrastructure and security vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, the U.S. Department of State issued a Level 4 travel advisory for Caracas, strongly discouraging travel to the city.

Karachi of Pakistan follows closely behind, ranked as the city with the highest personal safety risk. The US Department of State issued a Level 3 travel advisory for Karachi, urging travelers to seriously reconsider visiting due to the high travel safety concerns.
