TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will introduce a new passport design with upgraded security features on August 17, 2024, on the nation's 79th Independence Day celebration.
"We are currently finalizing the design and plan to introduce it on August 17 this year," Director General of Immigration Silmy Karim said on Friday, June 28, 2024.
Even though the latest passport design will be introduced on August 17, 2024, the Directorate General of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights will only issue an Indonesian passport with the new design and color a year later, to be precise on August 17, 2025, coinciding with the nation's 80th Independence Day celebration.
The new passport will also boast upgraded security features to comply with international regulations, which require updates every three years.
The current Indonesian passport, launched way back in 2014, uses a turquoise green cover for ordinary passports, blue for official passports, and black for diplomatic passports. All passports showcase Indonesia's gilded coat of arms and scenic illustrations on each page.
The 2024 statistics of the Henley Passport Index ranked the Indonesian passport at 68th place, with holders having visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 78 countries.
