Global Outcry; See Diverse Protests Against Israel from Various Countries

10 June 2024 22:24 WIB

Israeli forces pressed ahead with their air and ground bombardment of southern Gaza Strip, killing and wounding dozens of Palestinians, even as the United States and the United Nations repeatedly urged them to protect civilians. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The ongoing Israeli atrocities in Gaza, Palestine continue to incite global protests, leading to several countries imposing limitations and travel bans on Israeli citizens as a form of sanction. Some nations are prohibiting Israeli visas, restricting flights, or even outright banning Israeli passport holders.

Read on to discover diverse protests against Israel from different countries

1. Maldives (Ban entry for Israeli tourists)

The Maldives is one of the countries forbidding Israeli tourists. Last year, nearly 11,000 Israelis entered the Indian Ocean archipelago, representing 0.6 percent of total tourist visits.

The Maldives lifted the ban in the early 1990s and attempted to restore relations in 2010. However, normalization efforts were halted following the ouster of President Mohamed Nasheed in February 2012.

2. Indonesia (No diplomatic relations)

The State Palace and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs have refuted Jewish media reports that Indonesia plans to establish official diplomatic relations with Israel on February 29, 2024.

Indonesia has no formal relations with Israel because of its occupation of Palestine. Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in 1967 and the Gaza Strip in the same year, before Israeli forces finally withdrew in 2005. The West Bank's status as a militarily occupied territory has been upheld by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

3. South Africa (Withdrawal of ambassadors)

The South African government declared the withdrawal of its ambassador from Israel and the termination of its diplomatic mission in the country. The cabinet expressed disappointment at the Israeli government's refusal to abide by international law and UN resolutions calling for a ceasefire.

4. Bolivia (Breaking diplomatic ties)

Bolivia cut diplomatic ties with Israel on October 31, 2023, as Israel persisted in bombing the Gaza Strip. "Bolivia decided to break diplomatic relations with the Israeli state in repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip," Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani said at a press conference on October 31, 2023.

5. Syria (Rejects Israel’s existence)

Syria, one of the world's oldest countries, borders Israel to the northeast. Syria gained independence in 1946 and has since been embroiled in various conflicts with its neighbors, including Israel. The two countries share a border that continues to be a source of ongoing dispute.

Syria has never acknowledged Israel’s existence and does not acknowledge Israeli passports for entry into its territory. Conversely, Israel considers Syria an adversary and prohibits its citizens from visiting Syria without official permission.

6. Lebanon (Ban entry for Israeli citizens)

Similar to other countries in the Middle East, Lebanon has been engaged in a conflict with Israel since 1948. Israel deems Lebanon an "enemy state," and Israeli citizens are prohibited from visiting Lebanon without permission. Travelers with passports bearing visas or stamps upon entry to or exit from Israel are likely to be denied entry into Lebanon.
