5 European Countries that Will Fine Travelers Carrying Fake Designer Items

4 June 2024 11:27 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTraveling around Europe with counterfeit fashion designer items can lead to penalties. Some countries impose fines of up to 10,000 pounds sterling, or around Rp207 million, on tourists caught with fake goods of renowned fashion brands.

As reported by Yahoo, sports analyst Alex Hemming has revealed which countries are enforcing specific laws in a bid to tackle the spread of fake goods, as follows:

1. Italy

It is illegal to buy, sell, or possess counterfeit goods in Italy. The country has a law known as the “Legge Finanziaria”, which aims to protect the Italian fashion industry and consumers. Tourists who are caught carrying fake designer items can be fined up to 10,000 pounds sterling or Rp207 million. The authorities are on high alert in tourist spots and big cities.

2. France

France also has strict regulations against counterfeit goods under the French Intellectual Property Code. The law prohibits the import, sale, and possession of fake goods. Tourists caught with knock-off goods can be fined up to £6,000 or Rp124 million. French customs officers routinely check baggage at airports and borders.

3. Germany

Germany implements anti-counterfeiting laws through the German Trademark Act. The law prohibits the distribution, sale, and possession of counterfeit branded goods. The penalty for carrying counterfeit goods can be up to £4,000 or around Rp83 million. German authorities carry out random checks, especially at major transport hubs.

4. Spain

The Spanish Penal Code prohibits the distribution of counterfeit designer goods. It is illegal to possess or sell counterfeit goods, especially in tourist areas. The fine for possession of counterfeit goods can reach £2,500 or Rp52 million. Spanish police and customs officers frequently patrol markets and shopping areas.

5. Switzerland

Switzerland has strict laws against counterfeit goods under the Swiss Federal Act on the Protection of Trademarks and Indications of Source. Caught carrying fake goods, tourists can be fined up to £2,000 or Rp41 million. Swiss customs officials conduct thorough checks at borders and airports.

“To avoid these fines, it is essential to understand and follow the laws of each country you visit. Always buy authentic goods, keep your receipts, and be aware of the regulations to ensure a trouble-free trip,” Hemming said.
