TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Traffic Police announced that Indonesian driver's licenses will be recognized abroad starting from June 1, 2025. This is possible after the driver's license number is matched with the national identity number (NIK) of the national ID card (KTP). Starting next year, Indonesian driver's licenses can be used in ASEAN countries.

These countries include the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia. The Indonesian driver's license has been valid in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia since 1999.

"After June 1, 2025, Indonesian driver's licenses will be recognized in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand," said the Director of Registration and Identification of the National Traffic Police Corps. Brig. Gen. Yusri Yunus, quoted by the National Police public relations page on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

The recognition of Indonesian domestic driving licenses abroad, especially in ASEAN countries, is based on the Agreement on the Recognition of Domestic Driving Licenses Issued, which ASEAN published in 1985. This agreement has been extended since 1997.

However, several countries still have special policies regarding the use of Indonesian driver's licenses. For example, in Singapore, a domestic driver's license is valid for 12 months from the date of arrival. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, a valid international driver's license and a domestic driver's license are required for those wishing to drive in the country.

Indonesians who do not have an international driver's license can apply for a Malaysian driver's license at the Malaysian Driving Institute based on a letter issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. However, with the new policy for Indonesian driver's licenses, Indonesian citizens abroad can still use a domestic driver's license for driving permits without having to have an international driver's license.
