TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, reported that Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted on Saturday morning, June 1, 2024. Earlier, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.

The latest eruptions were recorded at 9:03 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) or 11:03 local time. Volcanic ash columns rose 5 kilometers from the crater.

"The ash column was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity toward the southwest," Mount Ibu monitoring post officer Richard Chaniago said in a report received in Jakarta on Saturday.

He explained that the eruption had a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 265 seconds, as recorded by the seismograph. The sound of a boom accompanied by rumbling was heard at the post in Gam Ici Village, Ibu Subdistrict, West Halmahera Regency.

Mount Ibu is a stratovolcano with a peak height of 1,340 meters above sea level, located in Ibu Subdistrict, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province.

PVMBG set the status of Mount Ibu to the highest activity level of Level IV since May 16, 2024. The volcanic and seismic activities are considered to be high.

From May 1 to May 29, PVMBG recorded tens of thousands of earthquakes at Mount Ibu, with the details: 59 eruption earthquakes, 14 avalanche earthquakes, 4,296 gust earthquakes, 212 harmonic earthquakes. Then there were 15 tornado earthquakes, 19,811 shallow volcanic earthquakes, 541 deep volcanic earthquakes, 8 local tectonic earthquakes, 315 distant tectonic earthquakes, and 1 felt earthquake.

The day before, in a meeting at the local regent's office, BNPB chief Suharyanto revealed that he had recognized the potential danger of a lava flood disaster. He stated that there was an atmospheric phenomenon in the form of equatorial Rossby activity that could affect the weather in the next few days in the form of moderate to heavy-intensity rain.

The rain has the potential to wash down the valley any residual material in the form of sand and rock from the volcanic activity that is still deposited on the summit or slopes of Mount Ibu. There are 13 points vulnerable to lava flows from Mount Ibu, leading to several residential areas.
