68 Percent of Jakarta's Rivers Heavily Polluted and Have Low Water Quality: Observer

29 May 2024 12:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA lecturer at the University of Indonesia (UI) Environmental Studies Mochamad Adhiraga Pratama said Jakarta's 2023 environmental management performance report showed pressure on the water quality sector.

The Regional Environmental Management Performance Drafters said the pressure came from the increasing need for clean water both by manufacturing industries and residential areas.

"The increase in activity will intensify the pressure on the environment, with waste, both domestic and industrial waste, and public awareness about waste management, as well as whether industrial players have the awareness to manage industrial waste," said Adhiraga in the FGD session on Tuesday.

Adhiraga said that the Environmental Office had actually carried out monitoring in 2023 for rivers at 120 spots, lakes at 180 spots, groundwater at 267 spots, and seawater at 53 spots.

"The result is about 68 percent of the rivers were heavily polluted and have low water quality, followed by groundwater at 54 percent, reservoirs at 47 percent, and seawater at 8 percent," he said.

In addition, said Adhiraga, there was a decrease in the value of the Water Quality Index (IKA) and Sea Water Quality Index (IKAL) from 2022 to 2023. "The IKA value was down from 41.6 to 40.42, while the IKAL value from 80.08 to 78.74," he said.
