TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi stated the government's commitment to the implementation of smart transportation or Intelligent Transport System (ITS) as one of the efforts to realize the reduction of greenhouse gas emission intensity and net zero emission in 2045.

"One of the realizations is through the development of Nusantara as the capital that is designed by implementing the smart and environmentally friendly transportation and mobility," Budi Karya said in a written statement on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

He hopes the new capital, called IKN, can be a pilot city with smart, integrated, and sustainable transportation. Budi said this could be achieved by implementing a traffic control zone system, electronic toll collection, and providing rapid transit buses and autonomous high-speed trains.

Meanwhile, Indonesia will host the 19th Asia Pacific Intelligent Transportation System Forum on May 28-30 in Jakarta. The biennial event aims to share knowledge, experiences, practices, and research on the implementation of smart transportation in Asia-Pacific countries, as well as explore financing mechanisms and investments for sustainable transportation.

Earlier, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his office was preparing the mechanism for the procurement of electric vehicles, which will be prioritized as public transportation in the new capital, IKN. The plan had been discussed by the Transportation Ministry and the IKN Authority.

Meanwhile, Chief Urban Mobility of IKN Authority Resdiansyah or Dian said that the use of electric vehicles as a whole will be targeted in 2045. However, during the transition period, the EV will be used in the main government areas or KIPP.

"We will try in KIPP with net zero carbon, no gas vehicles," he said at the Sequis Center building in South Jakarta on December 5, 2023.

He added that IKN must have a strong commitment to achieve the 80 percent public transport target. Everything must be built from scratch and ensure active mobility through walking, cycling, and public transport.
