India's Gita Sabharwal Appointed as UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Gita Sabharwal of India as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Indonesia. Sabharwal took up her post on Monday, with the approval of the host government, according to a release quoted by Tempo on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
The UN Resident Coordinator is the highest-ranking representative of the UN development system at the country level. With this appointment, Sabharwal brings close to thirty years of experience in development.
These include development supporting climate transition, sustainable peace, governance, and social policy while leveraging digital technology and data to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN wrote in a statement.
“Just landed in Jakarta! Very honored as I look forward to serve, as UN Resident Coordinator (designate), the (government), and the people of Indonesia, together with 26 UN agencies in one of the region’s largest economies, in support of SDGs,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
Sabharwal was previously appointed as the UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand in 2020. She also worked as the Peacebuilding and Development Adviser for the United Nations in Sri Lanka.
Before joining the UN, Sabharwal was The Asia Foundation’s Deputy Country Representative for the Maldives and Sri Lanka. She also held positions as the Poverty and Policy Adviser for the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development in India and Viet Nam.
