TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Before going on holiday to Indonesia, foreign tourists should understand how to get a SIM card so they can remain connected with people. Having a SIM card will also make it easier to browse for locations to stay and places to eat.

Even though free WiFi is available at several points, having a SIM card is absolutely necessary.

The following article will provide information about how to get a special SIM card for foreign tourists in Indonesia and how to register it.

Every time we get a SIM card, the first step to take is to register it. According to information taken from the official website of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), foreign citizens are required to register a SIM card, especially a prepaid card at official outlets.

You can also activate Prepaid cards at unofficial outlets, but only ones appointed as partners by the operators to validate the registration.

Upon arrival at the outlet, the officer will ask for registration of your passport number or Limited Stay Permit Card (KITAS) along with the prepaid phone number that will be used.

Furthermore, there are several ways to register and get a SIM Card for foreigners from several popular operators. Check out the list below.

1. Telkomsel

Telkomsel presents the Tourist Prepaid Card, a starter pack specifically designed for foreign tourists visiting Indonesia.

This card can be ordered via the official Telkomsel website from the tourist's country of origin and collected upon arrival in Indonesia.

Tourist Prepaid Card is only available for purchase by foreign tourists with data validation requirements using a passport and the phone IMEI number.

Foreigners can register their SIM card, especially a prepaid card, at the operator's customer service outlet based on passport data or a Permanent Stay Permit Card (KITAP) or KITAS.

Before you buy a SIM Card, make sure to prepare several things, including:

  1. Make sure the phone is not locked to a particular network.
  2. Include a passport photo, as well as a screenshot of the IMEI information by dialing or calling *#06#.
  3. Please note, with this purchase, you will get a data quota of 25 GB which is valid for 30 days.
  4. Tourist Prepaid Card purchases are non-refundable under any circumstances and for any reason.
  5. You can use 1 passport for a maximum of 3 SIM cards.
  6. The maximum time limit for SIM card collection is 14 days from pre-order.
  7. Prepare the documents required when collecting the Tourist Prepaid Card including confirmation email, passport, and cellphone IMEI.

Currently, Tourist Prepaid Cards can be found at GraPARI, Telkomsel booths, as well as outlets spread across Yogyakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara. For further information, you can visit the official Telkomsel website.
