TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest sites, announced on Monday, April 8, that the holiday of Eid al-Fitr marking the end of Ramadan will begin on Wednesday, April 10.
"Supreme Court declares tomorrow the last day of #Ramadan and Wednesday the first day of #Eid Al-Fitr," the official Saudi Press Agency said on its X account.
The timing of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, following the Muslim lunar calendar. Saudi media outlets reported that the crescent moon was not visible on Monday.
The United Arab Emirates and Qatar also announced that Eid al-Fitr would begin on Wednesday.
For the past month, Muslims around the world have refrained from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk and traditionally gather with family and friends to break their fast in the evening. Ramadan is also a time for prayer, with the faithful converging in large numbers in mosques, especially at night.
Residents of Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid al-Fitr for four days. The Saudi General Entertainment Authority (GEA) has published its Eid Al-Fitr 2024 event schedule, featuring various activities such as firework displays, music concerts, theatrical performances, and more. The event will take place across various regions in the Kingdom with the theme "Your Eid is Among Your Family and Loved Ones".
This Eid theme captures the essence of celebration and joy shared by individuals, families, and even businesses. The celebrations are designed to appeal to various age groups and ensure an inclusive Eid experience for everyone, according to GEA.
To celebrate Eid al-Fitr, fireworks will light up the skies in the Kingdom at 09:00 p.m. every night, starting on the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
A series of theatrical performances will feature Arab actors. On April 14, Riyadh's Mohammed Alali Theater will present the play "The Neighbor", while Jeddah will host the play "The Red Box" at the Batterjee Medical College Theatre, on April 13. Meanwhile, the Alasala Colleges Theater in Dammam will host on April 14 and present the play "Ors Aljen". Saudi Arabia will also hold eight music concerts held in various cities.
