TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent survey on Eid homecoming by data service provider Populix found that over 72 percent travelers prefer to use private vehicles rather than public transportation. The survey cited convenience and flexibility as the reason for this preference.
"While others choose public transportation and purchase round-trip tickets," said Populix CEO & Co-Founder Timothy Astandu in a written statement on Monday.
The survey involved 1,029 respondents, the majority of whom came from Muslim millennials and gene Z with an almost balanced gender ratio. Around 82 percent of the respondents are located in Java, while the rest are in Sumatra.
Over 77 percent of the travelers cited the three provinces of Java Island; Central Java, East Java, and West Java as their destinations. "As many as 62 percent of Muslims plan to return home during the Eid holiday," Timothy said.
About 40 percent of respondents will travel between 50-200 kilometers, while more than 50 percent will travel between 200-500 kilometers during the homecoming period.
There are at least two reasons why the respondents participate in the homecoming; homesickness and routine annual activity. Some of the things the respondents prepare for ahead of traveling home are Eid allowance (THR), gifts, and cakes for their families back home.
More than 50 percent of respondents start preparing for Eid during the third and fourth weeks of Ramadan. Meanwhile, some people choose not to go home because they have no family left in their hometown.
According to Populix data, three to seven days before Eid al-Fitr is the peak of the homecoming flow. "Meanwhile, the peak of the return flow is expected to occur on the third and seventh days after Eid al-Fitr," Timothy said.
The majority of respondents (70 percent) also expressed concerns about traffic jams during homecoming travel. However, most still choose to travel home with their families. "This shows the importance of family relationships and togetherness during Eid al-Fitr," he concluded.
