TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The inauguration of the president and vice president elected in the 2024 general elections, Prabowo-Gibran, will be held in the new capital of Nusantara, or IKN, East Kalimantan. This was announced by the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono.
"The presidential inauguration is planned to be held there," Basuki said at the House complex on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
The General Election Commissions declared that the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming pair was elected president and vice president in the 2024 political contest. They won in 36 provinces with 96 million votes, defeating the other two pairs; Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud Md. However, the victory is not final due to the 2024 election dispute, which is still being processed at the Constitutional Court.
The location for the inauguration of the 2024 president-elect was previously mentioned by the House’s Commission V member Roberth Rouw in a meeting on Monday, April 1. He said that the Constitution states the inauguration of the president and vice president is carried out in the capital city. Meanwhile, Jakarta is no longer the capital city of Indonesia following the passing of the Law on the Special Regional Province of Jakarta or the DKJ Law.
"Is IKN ready to inaugurate the president? Not here (in Jakarta)," Roberth said at Monday's working meeting. He then asked Basuki to convey the matter to President Jokowi.
"Will it be ready to be used later because the law already exists? In our law, which is still in force, it says that the president and vice president are inaugurated in the capital of the Republic of Indonesia," Roberth said. "Jakarta is no longer the capital."
The House of Representatives passed the DKJ during its plenary session on Thursday, March 28. With the ratification of this regulation, Jakarta has entered a new episode in its history by no longer having the status of the nation's capital. This is in line with plans to move the capital to East Kalimantan.
