TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries Affairs (KKP) will build a modern fishing village at Ancol Plengsengan Beach, Lateng Village, Banyuwangi District, Banyuwangi Regency. This project is estimated to cost around Rp 22 billion.
KKP Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani inspected the village site together with ministry and regency officials on Saturday, March 30.
The Minister said that the Modern Fishing Village program is the government's effort to change the face of traditional fishing villages into modern ones by equipping the villages with the latest fishing business facilities to increase productivity, community competence and economic growth.
The Lateng Modern Fishing Village will be built on an area of almost 1 hectare at the end of Ancol Plengsengan Beach, not far from the center of Banyuwangi City. This area is a seafood culinary center located in the fishing village area. It is known as a destination for tourists to enjoy delicious seafood while enjoying the panoramic view of the Bali Strait.
There are about 502 fishermen in the area with an average total production of 50 tons per month. Most of them catch fish using conventional methods by fishing and using nets, harvesting mainly mackerel tuna, lemuru (ray-finned fish), kacangan (sawfish barracuda), and bengkunis (big-eye tuna).
The Minister said that the construction of the modern fishing village in Lateng will start around May. The work is expected to be completed in three months.
