M4.7 Earthquake Hits Pangandaran; BMKG Detects Tremors Reaching Central Java

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 near Pangandaran, West Java on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 22:34 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Based on public reports and the agency’s records, the shaking was felt at the MMI III level in Pangandaran. Weaker tremors of MMI II-III level were reported in Tasikmalaya, West Java and Cilacap, Central Java.

In Banyumas, Central Java, the shaking was also felt at the MMI II level. To date, the agency claimed there were no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the quake.

The quake’s epicenter was located at 7.84 degrees South Latitude and 108.62 degrees East Longitude. “It is precisely in the sea, 20 kilometers southeast of the center of Pangandaran Regency, West Java,” Head of BBMKG Region II Tangerang, Hartanto, said in a written statement on Sunday, March 24.

With a depth of 80 kilometers, the Pangandaran earthquake was classified as a moderate quake, “triggered by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate,” Hartanto explained. 

The BMKG did not register any aftershock as of 22:55 WIB.
