TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Soekarno-Hatta Airport Resort Police successfully foiled an attempt to traffic potential Indonesian migrant workers to Serbia. The three suspects: FP, J, and WBP were detained at the Airport Detention Center.

Head of the Airport Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, Comr. Reza Fahlevi, stated that the three suspects duped nine Indonesian citizens with a tour to Malaysia and Turkey before flying to Serbia for permanent employment.

“They planned flights to Bukit Bintang, Malaysia, and then transit in Turkiye,” Reza said on Sunday, March 24.

The victims, identified as MH, AY, YA, AAS, IWB, A, DGM, MY, and S, were lodged at a hotel in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta before departing on Sunday, March 17. “Most of them are wood craftsmen from Wonosobo and Bali, who have skills in the furniture sector,” Reza explained.

Reza said that the perpetrators pledged the potential migrant workers permanent jobs in Serbia, but they were tricked into taking a vacation before reaching Serbia.

“It was planned that the second transit would be in Turkiye, where the victims would be smuggled to Serbia,” said Reza.

Deputy Head of Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police, Adj. Comr. Ronald Sipayung also disclosed that the nine victims were assured a monthly salary ranging from Rp7 million to Rp20 million to work in a furniture factory in Serbia.

In response to this case of human trafficking, Sipayung cautioned the public against being lured by offers promising a better life through overseas employment.
