TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The total solar eclipse has generated excitement among skywatching and astronomy enthusiasts worldwide, as the rare celestial event is expected to occur on April 8, 2024, just a few days before Eid al-Fitr.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the daytime Sun, casting a shadow over the Earth. As reported by USA Today, astronomers said that the upcoming solar eclipse is projected to last longer, be brighter, and be visible to more people than the one in 2017.
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) estimated that 99 percent of 99% of people living in the United States will be able to see a partial or total eclipse next month. It will begin over the South Pacific Ocean, cross Mexico and the eastern United States, and end in Nova Scotia, Canada.
According to NASA's website, the eclipse will begin at Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT and exit the continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.
An estimated 31 million people living in the land stretching from Maine to Texas will be able to see the total solar eclipse. Those outside the "path of totality" will see a partial eclipse, in which the moon blocks out little to almost all of the sun.
Can Indonesia see the total solar eclipse?
Unfortunately, this year’s total solar eclipse will not be visible from Indonesia as the track is far to the north, across North America. However, there are still ways to witness this rare event.
Some options include watching a live streaming from affected areas in the United States. For those outside of the path, be sure to watch the total solar eclipse safely and get ready for an extraordinary, unforgettable experience.
