TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 650 Chilean lawyers filed a legal complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Israeli government and its president, Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, March 12.
The complaint includes accusations of crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes committed against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The legal complaint was filed by a delegation of Chilean lawyers, including Chilean lawyer and former ambassador, Nelson Hadad, Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) Shawan Jabarin, and Chilean lawyer and professor, Rodolfo Marcone-Lo Presti.
According to Chilean lawyer Nelson Haddad, lawyers from various Latin American countries will likely join the complaint.
Earlier in December 2023, some 100 Chilean lawyers filed a complaint before the ICC with the same conviction.
The complainants, most of Palestinian descent, are calling for an arrest warrant to be issued against Netanyahu and other individuals responsible for these alleged crimes. They highlighted the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza since October 7 and the destruction of entire residential neighborhoods without distinguishing between civilians and combatants.
“All countries must denounce war criminals, ensuring they are held accountable, assume their responsibilities, face punishment according to the penalties of the Rome Statute, and provide reparations for victims,” Hadad said.
