TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of travelers for Eid homecoming in this year's Eid al-Fitr holiday is estimated to reach 193.6 million people, according to a study by the Transportation Policy Agency of the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, and experts.
Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said on Tuesday that the figure is an increase compared to the 2023 homecoming, which involved 123.8 million people. The figure is based on a survey that has been reported to President Joko Widodo or Jokowi and other relevant stakeholders. It involved many transportation experts and academics.
"Seeing this condition, we are taking measures both operationally and policy-wise in controlling, regulating transportation, and handling it comprehensively together with ministries and agencies in the central government, local governments, SOEs, and the private sector," said Budi.
Budi said that the government will implement effective policies to anticipate the surge of travelers resulting in road congestion. "We will regulate the homecoming dates, organize discounted public transport fares to encourage early homecoming, free homecoming program, traffic diversion, toll road discounts, and traffic arrangements, especially in high-risk areas for traffic jams," Budi said.
Budi explained that according to the survey, the largest origin of travel is East Java at 16.2 percent (31.3 million people), followed by Greater Jakarta at 14.7 percent (28.43 million people), and Central Java at 13.5 percent (26.11 million people).
Meanwhile, popular destinations for homecoming are Central Java with 31.8 percent (61.6 million people), East Java at 19.4 percent (37.6 million people), and West Java at 16.6 percent (32.1 million people).
Eid homecoming transportation mode is mostly trains at 20.3 percent (39.32 million), buses at 19.4 percent (37.51 million), private cars at 18.3 percent (35.42 million), and motorcycles at 16.07 percent (31.12 million).
The estimated peak of Eid homecoming period is recorded on Monday, April 8, 2024, two days before Eid with a potential movement of 26.6 million people (13.7 percent). The estimated peak of return flow for homecoming is on Sunday, April 14, 2024, with a potential movement of 41 million people (21.2 percent).
