TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi predicted that the peak of Eid homecoming will occur two days before Eid al-Fitr, or on April 8, 2024, when the collective leave begins. He said about 26.6 million people are expected to partake in the annual exodus.
“The estimated peak of the homecoming return is D+3, or April 14 with the potential movement of 41 million people,” he said in a written statement on Tuesday, March 12.
The calculation was made based on a survey conducted by the ministry’s Transportation Policy Agency in tandem with Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), as well as experts and academics in the transportation sector. Budi found that the movement of people during Eid was spread from several areas.
The survey showed that most of the homecoming travelers will likely hail from East Java, totaling 31.3 million people or 16.2 percent, followed by 28.43 million people from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi or 14.7 percent, and 26.11 million people or 13.5 percent from Central Java.
In addition, Central Java is the largest destination for the Eid homecoming, namely 31.8 percent or 61.6 million people, followed by East Java with 37.6 million people and West Java with 32.1 million people.
Budi further mentioned that most of the homecomers will take the train to return to their hometowns, with 20.3 percent or 39.32 million users. 37.51 million people will take buses, 35.42 million will use their private cars, and 31.12 million will use their motorbikes for the Eid homecoming trip.
Budi stated that the number of homecomers this year will likely increase compared to last year’s homecoming, reaching 71.7 percent or 193.6 million people.
