TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Checking bank account numbers is inevitable with the ease of digital transactions, particularly for online shoppers. If you have any doubts about the online sellers you are dealing with, verifying the legitimacy of their bank accounts could prevent you from falling for online scams.
Tempo outlines several websites that can verify whether or not their bank accounts are legit. These sites will tell you if a bank account has been involved in fraud or has had police reports lodged against them.
1. CekRekening.id
The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) presents CekRekening.id which allows users to report and search bank accounts or digital wallets (e-wallets) if they are indicated as fraud, fake investments, online gambling, extortion, and others.
If the account number has been reported in such crimes, the system will publish the account owner's data.
2. Kredibel.com
Launched back in March 2016 in Serang City of Banten, Kredibel.com was developed by a startup company. It was initially named Penipu.id.
The page can reveal the track record of a person or company based on reports and user reviews. If the account number is indicated to have committed fraud, the system will display a "Fraud Alert!" warning.
3. LAPOR!
LAPOR! which literally means ‘report’ is a national digital platform for public complaints (SP4N) managed by the Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Ministry, the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), and the Indonesian Ombudsman.
The page can also serve as a forum for people’s aspirations online, including requesting information on accounts suspected of belonging to fraudsters.
4. Banking or digital wallet apps
Verifying bank account numbers through mobile banking applications or ATMs can be an early step in determining their credibility. When users enter the account number, the system automatically displays the recipient's name, which can be used to look for the account holders' identity via search engines.
