TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry once again opened the free homecoming program by land and sea transport for the Eid al-Fitr holiday this year. This program is intended to anticipate the spike in private vehicle users, especially motorcycles.
The ministry is currently unable to reveal the specifics of the homecoming trend this year. Ministry Spokesperson Adita Indrawati said through WhatsApp on Tuesday that the data is still being researched.
However, a recent survey showed that more than 70 percent of the respondents are interested in traveling for homecoming this year. Adita also said the congested routes during holidays in 2024 are still the same as in previous years, “around the toll roads in Java and Merak”.
Based on the temporary poll by the Traffic Corps of the National Police, Eid al-Fitr homecoming will be participated by around 200 million citizens, a 6 percent increase compared to last year. In 2023, the number of people participating in homecoming reached 187 million.
In anticipation, the government is offering a free homecoming program, spearheaded by the SOEs Ministry, with 80,125 available tickets to various modes of transport, by land, sea, and train rides.
The program also offers free motorcycle shipping. “In addition to the passengers, motorcycles will be shipped free of charge, so citizens could use it to mobilize at their destination,” Adita said in a written statement on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024.
She also urged those participating in the Eid al-Fitr homecoming to avoid traveling with motorcycles since the risk of an incident is high.
